On the chessboard, geometric field

fixed in advance where two pairs of fools have the time

to circulate freely,

I, playfully, stir up trouble,

me harlequin zigzagging between the pieces.

Here and there I unseat a knight

or pulverize a pawn then, carried away,

I swoop on the Queen and take her.

Galloping, diagonally this time

and turning my back to the plain,

we start to disappear leaving behind us

a trail of powder

but I’ve got just enough time, with her in the saddle,

before the game fades,

to pass under an aqueduct, hug

the walls of Assisi,

climb a peak and notice,

inexpungible, mathematical, severe,

every player’s lot,

the Tower divinely crenelated

flanked by the same tall belfry

where, white on black,

I can at last love my Lady,

take her gently before

our fatal disappearance.
